This lot of three Civil War Era Carte de Visites were acquired together. The first two feature an unidentified gentleman sitting across the table from a lady that is most likely his wife. Neither is identified but the lady is probably Clara McCawley (or McCawby). The third photograph is identified as "My Great grand Mother Perkins" and signed by Clara McCawley (or McCawby). The photographer was L. Dowe of Sycamore, Illinois. Dowe was quite prolific but little is known about him. All three photographs have lightly clipped corners and are in very good condition. SOLD

This lot of four "framed and draped" carte de visites were all acquired together but there is no indication that they are related. The three gentlemen are not identified, nor is the photographer. The young lady is identified on the reverse as Nellie Fiske, Age 15 years, Taken Jan 2, 1865. No photographer is identified. The "framed and draped" decoration around the oval photograph was used from 1860 until 1868. All four are on very thin mounting cards, the corners are not clipped and each has some age spots. $48.00 for the lot of four, which includes a protective sleeve for each photograph. USPS Priority Mail postage, including a tracking number and insurance, is $7.00

This handsome gentleman has an impressive moustache and mutton chops and appears to be quite happy. He is not identified on the photograph but during research I did find a photograph, by the same photographer, of a gentleman that could have been his twin and was wearing the same clothing. I then contacted the family who identified him as James VanArnam and said he loved to have his photo taken! The photographer was J. (Joseph) Kirk, located at 194 Broad Street in Newark, New Jersey. He was at this location from 1864 until 1869. It is mounted on a white backing card with a thin green line around the outside edge and is in very good condition with a small rub at the top edge of the mounting card. $12.00 and includes a protective sleeve. USPS First Class Mail postage, including a tracking number, is $4.00

This very self-assured young man is not identified. The photographer was J. (Jonathan) Hess who was located on the SW corner of Fifth and Penn Streets in Reading, PA. Hess was the successor to Chas. Saylor who was at this address from 1860-1870. It is mounted on a thin white backing card and is in very good condition with some very minor age spots. $12.00 and includes a protective sleeve. USPS First Class Mail postage, including a tracking number, is $4.00

This distinguished young gentleman is identified on the reverse, in pencil, as Jonas Olsson. There is also a name, written with a fountain pen and slightly smeared, of Nils .... with the rest unreadable ~ not sure which is the name of the man in the portrait. He is very nicely dressed in a three piece suit with a prominent watch chain. There is no indication of the location or the identification of the photographer. It is mounted on a thin white backing card and is in good condition with a tiny pin hole at the top where someone (perhaps a wife or girlfriend) had placed it for easy viewing. $12.00, includes a protective sleeve USPS First Class Mail postage, including a tracking number, is $4.00.

This handsome young man is not identified, nor is there a location or photographer shown. He has very curly, but well styled, hair, a thin mustache and small goatee. A slight smile and sensual eyes give him a very pleasing appearance. His pants and vest are a window-pane check and his bow tie has an unidentified print. This well-put-together outfit is topped with an overcoat that appears to be a little large for his slim frame. The photograph has a small tear on the left side that appears to have been done before mounting it to the thin, white, backing card but otherwise all is in very good condition. $12.00, includes a protective sleeve USPS First Class Mail postage, including a tracking number, is $4.00

This unidentified gentleman is very well dressed in what could possibly be called "evening wear", with a very large bow tie. He has longish hair, an awesome mustache and goatee and a "haunted" look to his eyes. There is no indication as to the location or the name of the photographer. The oval photograph is mounted on a thin backing card with two fine gold lines around the outer edge and is in very good condition. $12.00 includes a protective sleeve USPS First Class Mail postage, including a tracking number, is $4.00

This middle-aged gentleman has a very authoritative pose but, unfortunately, is not identified, nor is there a location or a photographer shown. Extensive research failed to put a name to this distinguished gentleman and any information as to his identity would be much appreciated. By all appearances he is quite wealthy. His suit is finely cut and his vest a brocade fabric. He has a scarf wrapped and tied around his neck in an unusual manner. Most impressive is his heavy watch chain, which most likely is gold. The oval photograph has been reproduced on a larger format and mounted on a thin backing card. The lower left corner of the card has been lightly trimmed and there are a couple of small scuffs at the bottom edge of the photograph. Not Yet Priced, includes a protective sleeve USPS First Class Mail postage, including a tracking number, is $4.00
